One of London’s best-loved and most unconventional art events is returning to King’s Cross this September, bringing together 100 artists, specially created artworks and the chance to buy original art for £100 or less.
The Art Car Boot Fair will take over Coal Drops Yard on Saturday 5 September 2026 for its latest edition, PLAY FREE, with 100 artists invited to create a special series of works exclusively for the fair. These works will be on sale directly from the artists for £100 or less on the day.
The Art Car Boot Fair concept is deliberately simple – Artists set up their stalls, meet the public and sell original work directly, with the fair traditionally embracing the spirit of the car boot sale, including a little room for haggling. Previous editions have featured artists including Tracey Emin and Sir Peter Blake, while Vogue has described it as “the most stylish car boot sale imaginable”.
This year’s line-up brings together an eclectic mix of contemporary artists, photographers, illustrators, designers and cultural figures, including Vic Reeves, Rankin, Margo in Margate, Carrie Reichardt, Sara Pope, D*Face, Sickboy, Jessica Albarn, Bob and Roberta Smith, Keira Rathbone, RYCA, Magnus Gjoen, Toby Mott, GG the Illustrator, Mr Bingo and Helen Beard.
For 2026, British comedy icon Vic Reeves will bring his portraits of avians that were dubbed “the Andy Warhol of bird painting” by The Guardian art critic Jonathan Jones.
This year’s featured artist is Margo in Margate, whose unique style and compelling female portraiture has garnered a devoted online following. Her debut solo exhibition at Brighton’s Helm Gallery in January 2024 was a testament to her popularity, with all pieces sold out within 24 hours. At the Art Car Boot Fair, visitors will have a chance to buy the increasingly coveted artists’ work directly from Margo.
Carrie Reichardt, known for her mosaic works packed with vivid imagery and political and social commentary, joins Sara Pope, whose glossy paintings explore the seductive visual language of pop culture. Bob and Roberta Smith brings his trademark wit and bold graphic language, while artist and illustrator Jessica Albarn presents her intricate drawings and prints.
#RenaissanceSelfie is back with the makeover of a lifetime, using everyday objects from pillowcases, fruit and paper napkins to create fabulous Renaissance style portraits.
Internationally renowned photographer Rankin, best known for his portraits of Bjork, Madonna, David Bowie, Kate Moss, and the late Queen Elizabeth II will be giving visitors the chance to have their very own portrait taken by him.
GG the Illustrator, a visual artist on a mission to paint every council estate in London brings paintings, prints, and watercolour works to the Fair. Her scenes of council estate life in London have already won her famous fans including Central Cee and Unknown T.
Street art is also strongly represented, with British artist D*Face bringing his distinctive graphic style and darkly comic take on popular culture, while Sickboy joins the line-up with his colourful, psychedelic imagery and instantly recognisable visual language.
Elsewhere, Keira Rathbone transforms vintage typewriters into artistic tools, creating intricate artworks letter by letter and British shoe designer Tracey Neuls brings her distinctive take on footwear, while Helen Beard, working with Felt Culture, will showcase her bold and provocative paintings.
Artist and illustrator Mr Bingo will bring his trademark irreverence to the fair with his Waiting For Trump To Die wine. Priced at £120, the limited-edition bottle comes in its own specially designed, screen-printed and individually numbered box, making it as much a collectible artwork as a bottle of wine.
But perhaps the biggest draw — particularly for anyone who has ever assumed that collecting art is beyond their budget — is the price.
Participating artists have created special series of work exclusively for the Art Car Boot Fair, with pieces available for £100 or less. For anyone who has ever thought collecting art was out of reach, it’s an opportunity to buy an original work directly from an artist for the price of a night out in London.
